Kenzo Homme AW1994 Floral Intarsia Knit
Floral patterns were a significant motif throughout Kenzo Takada’s career. In 1970, he opened his first boutique in Paris, controversially named ‘Jungle Jap’, and painted the walls himself with a floral jungle motif inspired by French Post-Impressionist painter Henri Rousseau. The abstract botanical scenes would also go on to inform Kenzo’s design aesthetic for years to come - a sleek combination of bold prints in tandem with Japanese silhouettes and fabrics. It was optimistic, carefree, and revolutionary.
Kenzo introduced his Homme line in 1983, and took his contagious optimism to men for the first time. This knit, produced for Autumn / Winter 1994, evokes all of those distinct Kenzo adages. The pattern is a typical mix of various flowers and oriental references that appeared throughout the collection atop a black base. Made in Austria from heavy, high quality wool, the sweater is intarsia knitted such that it can be worn on the reverse to reveal a bold psychedelic pattern. Oversized with a ribbed hem and cuffs, this knit is instantly recognisable Kenzo, and a fun winter staple.
The pattern appeared on the women’s runway in several oversized looks, with similarities also in the mens’.
