COMME des GARÇONS AW1999 Glitter Knit
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Rei Kawakubo’s AW99 collection for Comme des Garçons was a subtle subversion of femininity, entitled ‘Transformed Glamour’. It was yet another reminder of her ability to reconcile her inner punk and lady, integrating the two into a cohesive presentation. The ‘lady’ was evoked in elegantly wrapped florals and sparkly sequin dresses and skirts, while the ‘punk’ undertones came by way of pointed leather derbies, stringy mohair garments and tartan on asymmetric silhouettes.
This sweater seamlessly combines both; its mohair-like weave hearkens back to the likes of Vivienne Westwood’s Seditionaries, where mohair sweaters became quintessential representations of the 70’s punk movement. Meanwhile, subtle glitter throughout provides a touch of femininity. The sweater's muted orange colourway and sparkly metallic sheen featured heavily throughout the show, across multiple runway looks, making for an easily wearable statement piece.
