Rei Kawakubo’s SS2000 HOMME PLUS collection is one of hers, and more widely, menswear’s most coveted. Designs share a common theme of patchwork, with rich, intricately woven fabrics sourced from the Gobelins Manufactory, a legendary tapestry factory in Paris. Since as early as the 15th century, Gobelins supplied furnishings and textiles for the French elite and monarchs, including Louis XIV. It continued to retain its reputation as the leading tapestry manufactory in Europe by supplying for French and international royalty until the early 20th century, and today provides limited quantities using traditional techniques for French government institutions.

Each piece from Kawakubo’s collection featuring the tapestries was one-of-a-kind, produced in small quantities as special orders for customers before they hit the shelves. Extreme proficiency and attention to detail went into the construction of each piece, hand-stitched with exposed asymmetrical seams, and seemingly randomly assorted with iconic Gobelins floral motifs. This shirt features the collections patchwork theme in a simpler, more wearable example.

Constructed from a base of bright red, lightweight cotton, panels of fabric in various widths and summer colours are patch-worked horizontally across the front. The panels are hand stitched, such that wavy irregularities in texture occur. A front pocket is again patched over the front in red, matched by the all red rear. The shirt featured on the runway worn under a blazer, along with its pattern appearing in multiple other colours and silhouettes.
