Raf Simons SS2014 Colourblock Schoolboy Shirt
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Notes of Pop art, colour and an overall preppy aesthetic were the takeaways from Raf Simons’ SS2014 show.
There seemed to be a renewed sense of “freedom” amongst the collection. Short shorts, elongated tunics, high socks and sneaker-boots were all the rage alongside summery prints and loud colour-blocking. While Simons’ early shows in the late nineties were typified by a more rebellious counter-cultural minimalism, Spring 2014 however, celebrated the inner-kid in us all.
This shirt featured in Look 3 of the runway, with other different-coloured iterations providing a hint of tailoring peeping out under oversized synthetic tunics. The tunics served as walking ads, each with its own slogan. “Super Nylon,” read one. “Yo-Ga,” “Artificially Flavoured,” and “This is the New Shape” read others.
Simons’ typically refined cut can be seen in this silhouette. With a slim fit and cropped sleeves, it is very much a schoolboy shirt with a summery flavour. Made of a crisp cotton, distinct block colours join seamlessly together. The shirts’ design could later be seen as the inspiration for Simons’ cowboy Americana shirts in his days at Calvin Klein.
