COMME des GARÇONS’ AW2010 collection was described as an exercise in pure form. Unexpected volume was created by way of inner padding - an effect that was reminiscent of her seminal ‘Lumps & Bumps’ collection of SS1997. This time however, the result was somewhat more grotesque; the lumps were darker, almost intestinal, sometimes jutting out through exposed stitching.
Somehow, Kawakubo always finds a way to salvage beauty from these moments. Flouncy and feminine tailoring in the forms of dresses and coats was subverted and enhanced by the bulk and heft of the padding.
In this case, the collections themes are realised in a far more wearable form. Remnants of the patchwork from the runway are replaced with panels that run horizontally throughout. Where the fabric meets, subtle ruching occurs. Other details include a hidden button placket, a curved Peter Pan-esque collar, waist pockets, and a flared hem that adds swathe and volume.
It can be styled as a coat or as a dress and is half lined.
