PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Considered one of the most theatrical and otherworldly designers of his era, Thierry Mugler needs little introduction. Having debuted his first collection, ‘Cafe De Paris’ in 1973, Mugler launched his eponymous label the following year and became known as the force that championed futuristic, fembot couture before his retirement in 2003.

His fashion shows challenged runway conventions and are considered some of the most spectacular of all time. Often staged for as long as an hour, models’ theatricality was key to the performance as a whole. According to curator, Thierry-Maxime Loriot, “Mugler belongs to a category that does not exist anymore, creators, couturiers who saw fashion as an art form.”

With an ethos that defied trends, core to the Mugler code was his desire to dress the human body and accentuate its natural beauty. This dress is a rare example of a Mugler piece exhibited on the runway for Spring/Summer 1999. Many designs would change for production while most pieces produced were not included in the shows.

Constructed of a crepe silk with full acetate lining, the dress features a black base with a white V graphic that contours and accentuates the torso. At the base of the graphic, as if an inverted continuation of it, a slit dramatically cuts from the thigh down to the hem. The monochromatic colour scheme - central to the show - contributes a futuristic edge while the slit gives power to Mugler’s heroine. The high boat neckline retains typical refined elegance.
