Still his work was hailed as advanced far beyond many of his contemporaries, even stirring controversy with never-before-seen silhouettes. Vogue remarked of his SS2007 collection that “Martin Margiela's best-kept secret—apart from his Mr. Invisible image—is that he is one of the finest tailors and cutters working today.”

Hailing from that collection, this vest is an enduring example of that very secret, but also of Margiela’s commitment to deconstruction and innovation. The silhouette is as sharp as a knife, a notion affirmed by its deep v-neck, and large silver dagger acting as the zip pull. The choice of imagery here also alludes to leather-wear both as fetishised, and as classic biker Americana.

The piece is pulled in further by gathered supple leather at the waist that draws the eye to its centre while creating a corset-like fit as it tapers to the hem.
