PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Walter Van Beirendonck founded his youthful and future forward label ‘W.&L.T.’ in 1993. A play on his own name and short for Wild & Lethal Trash, the label was a reaction to the present; a real time interpretation of culture with not-so-subtle hints of fetishised club culture.

A rare early adopter of the internet, Walter named his AW1997 collection ‘Avatar’. The term had taken the world by storm when flocks of internet users posted to online forums using a virtual alter-ego of themselves. To Walter, this was a dream come true. He, and everyone else for that matter, could be whoever or whatever they wanted to be - an idea that had permeated throughout his design ethos since the start. The collection was one of the first ever to be streamed live to the World Wide Web.

On the runway, iterations of this heavy duty coat were worn in several looks. It’s hardened military-esque outer shell defined by details such as shoulder epaulets, a trompe-loeil gun holster, and waist belt are representative of Walter’s idea of his ‘Avatar’. The interior however, is lined in neon red fleece that is soft and cozy to the touch - perhaps this is the REAL Walter… A rubber closure at the collar adds a touch of unusual though practical flare, allowing the lapel to be adjusted and worn a number of ways. Meanwhile, cut outs at the arm pits allow flexibility and ventilation when worn, while subtly revealing the inner lining. Fully lined, the coat can be worn fully reversed.
