PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

For Spring/Summer 1998, Walter Van Beirendonck somehow convinced an American folk dancing group to perform a good ol’ fashioned synchronised country hoedown on the catwalk. If that wasn’t enough of a feat, shortly after, the show transformed into an unapologetically dark, grungy Marilyn Manson-esque vampire dungeon, before finally a ballroom dance with gas-mask-clad models. The playful, almost childish clothes of the first segment became bondage club-wear and then formal attire with a twist.

Core to Walter’s design ethos is maintaining his naivety - ‘the child within’. His childhood obsession with animals has always persisted, manifesting itself in various forms on his runways. For SS1998 bold typography of various animals featured on the rear of many looks. ‘Tiger’, ‘Wolf’, ‘Eagle’, ‘Fox’ to name a few, and of course ‘Bear’; the animal which Walter has historically associated himself most with, featuring prominently in such collections as AW1995, AW1996, SS2010, SS2011, and as recently as AW2020.

This officer shirt features the words ‘Brown Bear’ in bold black typography to its rear. Military details such as epaulet button shoulders and sleeves, as well as double front pockets with darted panels to the hem. Here, an elongated contrasting red curved panel provides a touch of typical playfulness.
