Walter Van Beirendonck AW2017 ZWART Cap
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Walter Van Beirendonck titled his Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, “Zwart” — Dutch for black or dark. One could be forgiven for thinking that the name was chosen to reflect a somber tone. Walter’s vision of “Zwart” however, was much more upbeat than his title led on. A band of horned men played steel drums and panpipes, while models were masked with colourful bandanas. There was a heavy focus on tailoring, but in true Walter style, there was a twist. This came in the form of excessive exterior pockets, leather details and hugely oversized hands that drooped down from the outerwear.
Various iterations of this cap featured heavily on the runway and were the emblematic centrepiece of the show. Constructed from a thick black cotton, the cap has a fastening clasp at the rear to accomodate for all sizes. The runway’s namesake logo is embroidered boldly to the front in pink and green. Like with many of his pieces, a cheeky self portrait of a naked Walter is stitched on the rear left side.
As a member of the famed 'Antwerp Six' who graduated from the Royal Academy in 1980, Walter is certainly the most conceptual of his peers, and is highly regarded for his constant pioneering of new and futuristic aesthetics.
