PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Vivienne Westwood has long obsessed over all things nautical. Her first show in fact, aptly named ‘Pirates’ for AW1981, was full of swashbuckling looks straight from the high seas. In an interview that same year, Westwood and then business partner Malcolm McLaren, detailed fascinations with the 1980 film, The Island, along with a broader appreciation of 18th Century dandies and the counter-cultural punk movement that they had helped build. Still one of their most recognisable collections, the notion of pirates and sailors remain a pivotal characteristic of the Westwood label to this day.

This shirt features many of those defining elements, recontextualised in the form of a modern business shirt. An exaggerated three button high-neck collar and elongated double French cuff sleeves evoke 18th century privateer, and add the option for cufflinks. Meanwhile thick bar stripes in blue and brown are typical of sailor uniforms. Darts at the front and rear of the body provide a particularly slim and form fitting silhouette.

Similar shirts featured in several collections throughout the 2000s, most notably: SS2000, SS2003, AW2006, and SS2008.
