PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The title of Jun Takahashi’s Autumn/Winter 1999 presentation was “Ambivalence” - a feeling of contradictory sentiments that pervaded the collection. Twins walked the runway with mirrored make-up, hair and general demeanour, each wearing the same garment but one on the reverse. Both were equally wearable, though completely opposite: a denim jacket became a nylon windbreaker, a blazer unfurled into an elegant dress, while a pair of pants morphed into a skirt.

This notion of ambivalence is one that has persisted within Takahashi’s body of work. He himself has the words ‘chaos’ and ‘balance’ tattooed on each arm, and regularly references their inverse relationship in his clothes.

For the AW1999 collection, a range of t-shirts were released with contrasting graphics and slogans: Love / Hate, Build / Destroy, Sweet Dreams / Nightmare to name a few.

This is a rare example of one of those t-shirts. Most notably, it is constructed from two separate garments sewn together at the seams, giving it a unique weight and feel. The screen printed graphics are much more satirical than many from the collection though still keeping with the theme of opposites - on one side is a hot dog on a khaki base, the other a bright green ice cream scoop on brown. Both sides maintain infinite wearability and feature the collections’ namesake above, as well as ‘UndercoverJunTakahashi’ below.
