Undercover AW1997 Navajo Mohair Knit
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
This knit hails from Jun Takahashi’s formative years as a designer. Having founded his label in 1990, and opening the now iconic “NOWHERE” store alongside Nigo of Bape three years later, Takahashi was beginning to make quite a name for himself. Around this time, Rei Kawakubo became an early champion of his work, as Undercover ascended the fashion hierarchy.
Takahashi’s Autumn / Winter 1997 collection was entitled “Leaf”. In a somewhat ambiguous presentation consisting of various cultural references, native American imagery appeared most consistently - though typical hallmarks of Tokyo underground were also apparent.
The knit is constructed from soft and textural mohair-like fabric - a punk favourite. On a navy base, a large graphic made to resemble a Navajo textile features prominently. On either side of it, grey stripes run vertically along the entire length of the front and rear. The sweater is a cozy winter staple with a slightly loose fit.
