Romeo Gigli AW1995 Double Breasted Fur Collar Coat
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Described as having “singlehandedly chang(ed) the course of fashion” by the Los Angeles Times, Romeo Gigli’s story is a tumultuous one but his impact on the fashion landscape was lasting.
Gigli’s subtle, curved silhouettes offered a softness that was in opposition with the conventional power suiting and body-con dressing of the 80s. Inspired by orientalist notions, his designs reintroduced a sense of romanticism to the hard-bodied lexicon of the time and proved to be key in establishing the nineties aesthetic: a dialogue that was continued by Alexander McQueen and John Galliano; and more recently, Haider Ackermann.
Dating from Romeo Gigli’s Autumn/Winter 1995 collection, this coat is constructed of a wool/rayon blend chambray. Deep blue and mid-length, it is double breasted and has shades of 19th century tailoring. Its defining detail is a romantic oversized shawl-style fur collar that can be folded down or buttoned up and concealed. Completed with angled front flap pockets, it has a slight sheen and is a trans-seasonal weight. Similar silhouettes featured in consecutive Autumn/Winter shows from 1991 through to 1997.
