Romeo Gigli’s design approach was a refusal to go along with the tide. He entered the scene in Milan, 1981, where he was something of an outlier - his fluid sense of cut and drape was the antidote to the power-suiting, shoulder pads, and body-con dressing that was defining the era. A decade later, Gigli was recognised as the most influential designer of his time. Vogue testified in 1989 that he was the “leading force in a new generation of designers proclaiming a different fashion sensibility”. Gigli brought about a renaissance of Regal ornamentation and luxury fabrics, inspired by classical and rococo cultures, while his tailoring took cues from the 19th and 20th century - influences that he passed on to one of his early protégé’s: Alexander McQueen.

2003 marks the year of Gigli’s last full collection. Throughout his tumultuous 20 year career, Much of Gigli’s design ethos was about balance. The Romantic opulence of his fabrics was counterbalanced by freedom and understated practicality. Even the most formal pieces had an effortless elegance and fluidity of cut.

This jacket is a perfect example of GIgli’s balancing act. Its gold iridescent sheen evokes opulence, bouncing light and changing colour depending on the observer. Exceptionally intricate, abstract hand embroidered jacquard pleating throughout creates undulated ruching and unexpected texture. In contrast, playful elements like its polka dot lining and Peter Pan collar soften the look. Buttons fasten the front (Gigli abhorred zippers), while slash waist pockets add a sense of practicality. The fabric is lightweight, though sturdy.
