Rick Owens’ ethos is distinctly iconoclastic. As an outsider that openly rejects the fashion industry, he stands alone with a powerfully distinct vision of futurism, verging on post-apocalyptic grunge. Owens, himself, prefers the term “glunge,” - equal parts grunge and glamour. So distinct are his angelic, oversized designs that he has developed a cult-like status across all levels of fashion.
For his SS17 collection entitled “Walrus,” Owens was able to perpetuate his vision with uncompromisingly new garments that the designer himself described as unfinished. Techy fabrics featured with oversized pants alongside tunics that were either loose and v-necked or figure hugging with swathes of fabric draped around the body like curtains in a nod to French couturier, Madame Grès.
A mix between a tunic and a tank, this silhouette featured in a variety of colours and fabrics on the runway. Its deep pointed v-neck also appeared prominently, while the beige colour scheme was seen in almost a third of runway looks alongside trademark blacks, warmer toned yellows and tans. Characteristic square seams accentuate the shoulder and piping runs from the v-neck collar down to the curved hem. The garment falls asymmetrically at the front and the fit is typically gender neutral.
