Moschino Couture SS1992 Bauble Button Officer's Suit

After his SS1991 collection, Franco Moschino took a short hiatus from the runway until his final collection in 1994. The three year break from the limelight certainly didn’t slow the success of his brand however… On the contrary, the period consisted of many of his most iconic designs, made and worn by the likes of Princess Dianna, Madonna and Fran Drescher to name a few.

During his short ten years designing under his trademark, Moschino consistently subverted and parodied fashion from every angle. This skirt suit from the Spring / Summer 1992 Couture collection for example, contrasts traditional military style tailoring with classic Moschino-isms. It’s bright red base and contrasting black piping throughout are both closely associated with military-garb. Moschino softens these elements with a curved lapel and unique oversized spherical bauble buttons at the cuffs, pockets and waist that have an almost furry texture. The suit itself is also largely unstructured, easy to wear, and flattering.

AW1990 closely followed this same theme of military deconstruction, and Princess Dianna herself was photographed wearing an army green example on a trip to Tokyo.
