Moschino SS2006 'Truly Italian!' Pasta al Pomodoro Blazer

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Rossella Jardini’s Spring/Summer 2006 Moschino ready-to-wear collection was certainly a head-turner and arguably deserves more acclaim. Pasta was on the menu with Jardini serving up a blend of satire, kitsch and Italiana onto unique and wearable garments. Inspiration, meanwhile was taken from founder, Franco Moschino’s final SS1994 runway.

Models were adorned with plastic moulds of pasta dishes on anything from tops to outerwear, bags and shoes. Several looks even had models wreathed in pasta crowns - farfalle and spaghetti woven to form crosses and tied with fettuccine bows. Necklaces and hair clips continued the pastawear sentiment. This was camp at its very best.

Italian heritage was a focal point of the collection. The slogan, “TRULY ITALIAN!” appeared satirically on a tank top on the runway as well as being emblazoned on the lining of this blazer - in the same San Serif as the “SORRY, I’M ITALIAN!” catchphrase that was used in 1994. Gingham lined, as if representative of the checkered tablecloths from an authentic Italian trattoria, the jacket is easily reversible to reveal the slogan.

Penne and farfalle with basil and tiny cherry tomatoes emblazon the lapel, while coils of spaghetti sprawl across the beige cotton/linen blended front, as though they’d been spilt accidentally while the wearer was devouring their meal. Large red tomato-like buttons complete the dish.

Who’d have thought pastawear could be so appetising?

Since taking over the helm, current Moschino creative director, Jeremy Scott, has continued the comedic use of perishables in his collections, specifically in AW2014 and AW2020.
