Junya Watanabe AW2011 Cocoon Biker Leather Jacket
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Junya Watanabe’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection had a distinct flavour. All forty-two looks featured leather, and most, an iteration of a biker leather jacket. As if an ode to the silhouette, Watanabe presented, celebrated and challenged its conventions, adding volume, shape, ruching and cocooning. The results saw the silhouette tweaked into cape-like ponchos, elongated into dresses, formalised into blazers, and toughened into coats.
The collection can be seen as the antidote to his AW2007 men’s show, where again Watanabe shone a light on the silhouette. This time however, his approach was more elegant and subversive. His introduction of an hourglass silhouette was described by Tim Blanks of Vogue as “perversely simple” and perhaps a “metaphor for Junya’s entire career.” Typically a symbol of freedom and rebellion, Watanabe was able to give the silhouette new meaning.
Constructed of supple black cowhide leather, this iteration was seen in Look 38 of the runway. Its key point of difference lies in its cocoon-shaped body. The extra fabric creates a bouncy, voluminous hem, as well as artful gathering at the rear. Elegantly cropped in the body and sleeves, the jacket has a button-down collar that fastens easily thanks to silver snap buttons. The heavy duty front zip is asymmetrical, while zips also appear at the cuffs.
