PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Gaultier’s Autumn/Winter 1991 men’s collection, ‘Les Prisonnier,’ was inspired by the British Sci-Fi spy thriller TV series, The Prisoner. The show explores the journey of an unnamed British intelligence agent, “Prisoner No. 6” as he launches a campaign to overthrow the shadow government that ruled the coastal village where he was imprisoned. Many looks in the collection alluded to clothing seen in the series, while the show invitation further cited the series’ motifs.

This rare and early cardigan/jacket is a classic Gaultier statement piece. Subdivided into 5 different colours, the body is constructed from smooth knitted wool, while the sleeves are made up of a tightly woven thick cable knit. The proportions are similarly juxtaposing; the torso is relaxed before cropping and cinching dramatically at its ribbed hem. Meanwhile, the sleeves are figure hugging and disproportionately elongated, intended to be rolled up (the cuff is already stitched at the fold). The bright blue and green front is balanced by the more subdued black rear, though the sleeves remain an eye-catching motif on both sides.

The colouring of this jacket is intended to match that of the show's invitation. Similar colouring and colour blocking also appeared in the women’s show of the same season, as well as the year prior for SS1990.
