John Galliano, like his compatriot Alexander McQueen, famously ascended the echelons of the fashion world from relative austerity, becoming one of the most acclaimed designers of his era. Galliano launched his eponymous label in 1984 upon graduating from Central Saint Martins, and within three years, was named British designer of the year. His graduate collection, entitled, ‘Les Incroyables,’ inspired by the French Revolution was famously purchased in its entirety by established London boutique, Browns, and given a full window display.

In 1995, Galliano was appointed creative director of Givenchy, succeeding Hubert de Givenchy, before moving to Dior for an unprecedented 15 year spell from 1996-2011.

Galliano’s SS2008 show - in typical mischievous style - was held in the annex at the Stade Français - Paris’ main football stadium - on a Saturday night after a major rugby match…a logistical nightmare for his audience.

Known for his brilliant appropriation, encyclopaedic historical references and blend of extravagance with intricacy, Galliano’s SS08 collection was rife with typical tropes - from classical 30s bias cutting to frills and printed chiffonery. The 20s and 40s were also referenced with picture hats, dresses, suits and frocks - similar to those he was designing at the time for Dior.

This waistcoat features ornate and classical features intertwined with detailed embroidery on a summery blended black base with white pinstripe. Floral gold sequins embroidered at the left chest are flanked by intricate red lace trefoil embroidery on the right, while assorted colourful beads illuminate the asymmetrical hem. Polyester lined with Galliano’s famous Gazette newspaper print that first appeared on the runway for his Spring/Summer 2000 couture collection at Dior; it exhibits a classic three-button closure, with each metal button stamped “G” for Galliano. An elaborate tapestry of colourful beads in the shapes of hearts and flowers adorns the rear, atop a back panel, again with the Gazette print.

A similar vest featured in the final look of Galliano’s SS08 men’s presentation with Galliano himself also wearing the vest for the show’s finale.
