Jean Paul Gaultier SS1999 Venus de Milo Mesh Top
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Jean Paul Gaultier’s ability to reinterpret pop cultural imagery into iconic prints has resulted in a cult-like following. When it comes to his legendary use of printed mesh, this is especially evident. First introduced in the form of tribal tattoo designs in his SS1994 collection, Gaultier’s mesh has recently become the subject of much broader appreciation. This is largely due to an influx of celebrities adorning the famed pieces, as well as a recent collaboration with American streetwear giant, Supreme.
This particular mesh top hails from his Gaultier Jeans line’s SS1999 collection. On both front and back, it features a large print of the early Greek marble sculpture ‘Venus de Milo’ (c.100BC) wearing denim shorts, with Gaultier’s signature dragon tattooed across her body. Various religious iconography columns down the left side, while ‘Gaultier Jean’s’ is written in both a stylised English and Japanese. This complex amalgamation of cultural imagery, combined with Gaultier’s distinct aesthetic and interesting choice of materials, prove this to be an excellent example of his worldly oeuvre, which Vogue described as a “...startling vision of cross-cultural harmony”.
The colourful body is contrasted by black wool sleeves. Gaultier’s mesh is lightweight and extremely stretchy, designed to cling to the wearer like a second skin.
