PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

For Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1997 collection, the French designer showed once again that he was not afraid to challenge notions of good taste and decorum. The show famously concluded with a model in a bridal gown flashing the audience with her flower bedecked G-string. Many of the pieces presented were convertible, and models undressed, unzipped and altered their looks as they walked.

Gaultier’s trademark trompe-l'œil technique (French for ‘deceive the eye’), elaborated on this idea while elevating various silhouettes with unique charm and humour. Its use, like many of Gaultier’s designs, was often equal parts playful and sexually charged.

In the case of this skirt, the technique is used to great effect. By scanning and printing a denim prototype onto smooth fabric an optical illusion is realised, encompassing everything from stitching, to silver hardware, the rear logo patch, and even the folded cuff of the pants. Cheekily, Gaultier has used the illusion to suggest that the wearer’s fly is permanently undone. The skirt itself is long and flowy, and is constructed from a soft and stretchy cotton/spandex blend with an elastic waistband. Given the artisanal nature of the creation of these pieces, each garment is entirely unique.
