PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Jean Paul Gaultier sunglasses are typically refined with a futuristic sensibility. Released in smaller quantities than most designer glasses throughout the 80s and 90s, they have since become some of the most sought after. Gaultier himself oversaw both design and production: a vision not typically shared amongst other couture houses with their accessory lines.

The 55 model is renowned for its steampunk style and is undoubtedly the most recognisable of all Gaultier models. Inspired by industrial Victorian era objects and mechanisms, steampunk style references a view of the future, albeit from the past, and draws parallels with the artistic genre of ‘retrofuturism’.

Gaultier 55s were released in both optical and sunglass versions, and were produced exclusively by Japanese eyewear manufacturer, Murai. Gold, with typical steampunk details, these model 55-4177 sunglasses have the JPG logo stamped on the nosepiece and are completed with tortoise shell arms. They feature round tinted lenses and a high quality brass frame. Elaborate detailing adorns the temples, while externally visible bolts poke out from the rims. Rivets and screws intentionally jut out at the hinges - as if assembled from the remains of a Victorian steam engine - and feature diamond-shaped cut outs.

Gaultier’s steampunk sunglasses have been worn by household names for decades: from Madonna to Tupac and more recently, ASAP Rocky and Rihanna. They come with the signature silver Gaultier case.
