PRODUCT INFORMATION:

“In the early 1990s, there was scarcely anything more exciting in fashion than a Jean Paul Gaultier show,” declared Tim Blanks of Vogue.

Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1994 collection, ‘Les Tatouages’ is regarded as one of his most pioneering, and widely ranked among the best fashion shows of all time. Not without typical Gaultier provocation, Les Tatouages was a diverse and uplifting analysis of culture, diversity, spirituality, the body, skin, past and present.

Inspired by a fascination with body art and tattoos, the collection explored the dichotomy between skin and fabric, with Gaultier presenting a more nuanced vision of the two, suggesting they can function indivisibly as one. The experimental work of LA-based body and performance artist Ron Athey was a key inspiration, as were Gaultier’s experiences attending tattoo conventions.

A careful amalgam of almost one hundred looks, Les Tatouage was in the purest sense, a sartorial adventure. Seen today as a symbol of diversity in fashion, the show was full of the unexpected and the extraordinary; from men in skirts and body armour resemblant of Joan of Arc to hip-hop inspired denim and trompe-l’oeil mesh tops acting as a second skin. African and Indian tribal references were compounded by the eclectic casting of an array of models of non-specific race, gender, age and body type. Never scared of controversy, Les Tatouages was a vehicle for Gaultier to fight racism, championing “the other”, rather than fearing it.

These jeans appeared in kilt form in look 30 of the collection and were worn on the runway by a male; a progressive concept at the time. Like the skirt version, they are deliberately flared, widening from the knee to the heel. Fringe detailing cascades vertically down the jeans from the base of the waistband to the hem. A sense of “laissez fare” French attitude permeates from the blasé distressing. They have a low rise, with a mismatched denim waistband that features a hidden clasp and button closure. Both the typical JPG Jeans logos feature on the figure-hugging mid-weight denim, with an exterior patch on the front left leg and branding on the loop at the rear.
