Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1995 collection, entitled ‘Fin de Siécle’ took the world on a journey through a century of fashion. Who else would attempt such a feat in a single collection but Gaultier himself?

Influenced by the craze for combining vintage and new garments, Gaultier’s aim for the collection was to recreate “the spirit of elegance.” “It’s not modern to do an exact copy,” said the designer, “you have to mix up the decades in order to achieve a modern silhouette.”

The synthesis of references culminated in a mix of dainty white dresses, parasols, feathers, corsets, suits and florals on materials as far reaching as leather, fur, denim, mesh and lycra. The evolution of femininity was clear to see.

These pants feature an intricate textured jacquard weave. Similar reflective weaves were seen in multiple looks throughout the show, featuring on jackets, coats and skirts. Constructed of a lightweight polyester with a maroon base, the pants have a bronze sheen with hints of purple shining through. The complex woven acetate design suggests at earthy roots, extending and repeating, while random heat pressing further contributes to the pants’ three-dimensional feel. The result: a textured tapestry whose beauty reveals itself in the light.
