PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Known for their relentless experimentation with technology, in 2016 Issey Miyake discovered yet another evolution of their trademark pleating known as the ‘Baked Stretch Process’. Wavy bands of heat reactive fabric are baked at high temperatures and, much like bread rising in the oven, the fabric swells and expands resulting in a protruding three dimensional effect. When worn, garments had a slinky spring that moved and expanded with the wearer.

For Pre-Fall 2017, creative director Yoshiyuki Miyamae took the hypermodern pleats in contrast with ancient shibori and itajime dyeing techniques. The vivid palette was a nod to the collection’s key reference - natural phenomena such as lightning bolts and rainbows. In conjunction with the new technique, garments changed colour according to the point of view of the observer, as if like a real rainbow. Genius.

This singlet with its rainbow zig-zag baked pleating typifies these ideas, and the brands groundbreaking innovations as a whole. Seemingly random bands of red, yellow and orange are divided by deep blues that energise and vivify the alternating colours. The singlet takes on a sculptural element when worn thanks to the 3D pleating, while also creating added interest by way of its tactile nature. Constructed from lightweight but sturdy polyester, it is extremely versatile in its wearability.

The same colourful 3D pleating featured heavily in several silhouettes on the runway and in multiple campaigns throughout 2016 and 2017.
