Issey Miyake Men 1990s Fluro Snap Bracelet

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

A unique and rare item, this snap bracelet was sold at the opening of the Issey Miyake store in inner city Melbourne in the 1990s. While little is known about the store - other than its address at Shop 2, 177 Toorak Rd, South Yarra - it is to this day the sole stand-alone Issey Miyake store to grace Australian shores.

Constructed of a plastic upper that feels slightly padded, the bracelet’s fluorescent yellow top layer features a reflective sheen. The flip side, by contrast, is more neutrally coloured and bears the “Issey Miyake Men” logo.

Easily worn anywhere along the arm or even at the ankle, its snap-on, curl-off flexibility provides for a layer of playfulness often seen in Miyake’s garments. Its design, when worn, is resemblant of the Issey Miyake “O” Series watch bracelet, designed in 2001 by Tokujin Yoshioka.

It is likely this snap bracelet provided the inspiration for Balenciaga’s very own iteration of the snap band, with similar colouring albeit branding on the exterior side. Balenciaga’s snap bracelets were sold along with an exclusive range of limited edition merchandise as part of the brand’s collaboration with Collette in 2017. The collaboration was marked by a six week residency at the Parisian flagship that featured art installations and even a free manicure service from Balenciaga’s nail artist.
