In the early part of 1998, Helmut Lang relocated his label from Vienna to Manhattan, simultaneously migrating his runway presentations from Paris to New York. As anticipation was rapidly building around his debut collection in the US, Lang, at the last minute canceled the show, throwing editors into uproar by instead posting the AW1998 show on the internet: the first time a fashion collection had ever been presented online.

In an interview with Vogue, Lang commented “I sensed at the time that the internet would grow into something bigger than imaginable...It was a shock to the system, but a beginning of the new normal.” A deliberate and voracious defiance; it was an innovative bid to seize control of his label’s own output and image.

Beyond its virtual influence, Helmut Lang’s AW1998 collection was as sartorially memorable as it was historically significant. Abstract and layered streetwear that later became synonymous with his aesthetic was presented for the first time here in precise and exaggerated forms.

This winter parka typifies the bold aesthetic of Lang’s late 90s designs. Consisting of an exterior shell constructed from a cotton/nylon blend with a water-resistant coating, as well as a luxurious removable alpaca lining, the parka is incredibly warm and pleasurable to wear. Its military inspired silhouette is contrasted by Lang’s impeccable execution and attention to detail. The front closes with a concealed zipper and buttons, leading to a high neck with an oversized hood.

Drawstrings at the neck and pockets can be cinched and tied, complimented by an adjustable strap which wraps around the waist and fastens with snap buttons to create a flattering contoured line. At the interior, tonal brown buttons attach the alpaca lining, which can be easily removed and worn on its own. Similarly, the lightweight outer shell makes for perfect trans-seasonal wear, while the waist belt doubles as a functional shoulder strap, Lang’s signature utilitarian bondage style.
