Gianni Versace AW1984 Batwing Grid Knit
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Having launched his eponymous label in 1978, Gianni Versace’s early designs were typically more understated but every bit as cutting edge as his 90s creations.
This sweater - from Versace’s Autumn/Winter 1984 collection - is cut with a dolman sleeve, and as such has no defined seam at the shoulder. Instead, the shoulders are wide with deep armholes that taper to elastic cuffs, evoking a batwing-like appearance that is accentuated by the cropped body and sleeves. The batwing shape was also very popular with Issey Miyake in the 1980s.
Constructed of a wool, alpaca and nylon blend, the sweater is thick and has a luxurious feel. It features a grid design of repeated grey rectangles on a black base and has a very androgynous fit. Similar colouring and patterns were seen throughout the men’s and women’s collections for the season. Lada Gaga was photographed in an outfit with a similar print from the AW86 collection at the AW2014 Versace Couture show in Paris.
