GANRYU SS2017 Crinkle Denim Shorts

For close to a decade, GANRYU was one of four brands under the COMME des GARÇONS umbrella run by individuals other than Rei Kawakubo; operating alongside Junya Watanabe, Noir and TAO. Founder, Fumito Ganryu began his career as a pattern cutter for Junya Watanabe - a revered position, considered to be one of the industry’s most challenging - before being awarded his own namesake label GANRYU in 2008.

Ganryu brought with him an exciting, laid back and ultimately wearable approach to fashion. Blending American sportswear with Japanese deconstruction. Designs were noted for their progressive, avant-garde tendencies, always with unique construction transcending the confines of gender. GANRYU’s final presentation was at Tokyo Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2017 - its closure, a decision that disheartened much of the brand’s loyal following.

Ganryu now designs under his own eponymous label, ‘Fumito Ganryu’, following in the footsteps of other CdG alum, Chitose Abe and Junichi Abe of Sacai and Kolor respectively.

These pleated shorts are from that final SS17 collection, which featured primary tones and an 80s feel with denim and garments with prints. “Everything should be done as simply as possible,” noted Ganryu about the collection.

In typical fashion, here Ganryu took a simpler garment and created intrigue with the addition of an interesting twist; in this instance: crinkling that features heavily throughout. Reminiscent of an Issey Miyake garment, the crinkled pleating adds an extra dimension to the shorts while also providing what appears to be a jagged hem. The cropped 5.9 inch inseam creates a youthful feel, while the drawstring waist further suggests their lack of defined gender. Constructed of a neutrally coloured lightweight denim, pockets feature at the front and rear, while deliberate, almost-preppy white stitching features on seams.
