Dolce & Gabbana AW1987 Busque Corset

Domenico Dolce & Steffano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana first debuted in 1985 at the Milano Collezioni for emerging talent. The following year, they began production on their first collection entitled, ‘Real Woman’. By 1987, they had shot Dolce & Gabbana’s first ever campaign featuring Italian model Marpessa Hennink with photographer Fendinando Scianna. Today, they are considered pioneers of Mediterranean style.

This corset featured in that first campaign, shot in Sicily in March of 1987 for the brand’s Fall/Winter collection later that year. Unlike other fashion campaigns at the time, this was as much an artistic exploration as it was a fashion one. Photographer, Scianna, was hired under the pretence that he had no fashion background. Instead, the campaign’s focus was to document Sicily, its social traditions and religious iconography. Photographed in black and white, it turned to the past to project the future, highlighting the authentic, the sensual and the austere.

Titled ‘La Sicilia’, the collection featured simple outfits inspired by the southern Italian peasant women typical of the region. Its effect made the “widow look” desirable. Typically an undergarment, this corset rejoices in its elegant simplicity. It features a burgundy body with subtle piping, central metal busque fastening at the front, black bra straps, accented sides and rear.

Corsets have always been at the heart of the Dolce & Gabbana DNA. Madonna famously ordered a Dolce & Gabbana corset from their New York showroom in 1990, while Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford have also famously worn the creations.
