For SS2001, Rei Kawakubo mixed camouflage with dizzying Op Art patterns in a collection entitled ‘Optical Shock’. The unusual blend of contradictory patterns was far from accidental; it represented the conscious chaos at the turn of the millenium in light of rising tensions between various warring nations.

Strips of camo were stitched tactically across numerous silhouettes including shoes, socks, headwear and suits. This t-shirt is an excellent and easily wearable example of the show's enduring themes. The camo motif provides a pop of subtle contrast against the navy blue base, while the collar and hem have been slashed and resewn asymmetrically lending the top a unique shape and look. It is constructed from a soft and lightweight jersey cotton.

Made in Japan.
