PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The theme of COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS’ SS1998 presentation was ‘New Natural’ according to Mr. High Fashion. A mix of synthetic and natural fibres were used to create smokey pastel colours in boxy silhouettes. The show however was most notable for its models, all of whom were artists from the design teams responsible for the presentations invitation cards. Their various ages, body types, nationalities, and mannerisms demonstrated the HOMME PLUS lines universal wearability.

Camouflage has long played an important part in much of Rei Kawakubo’s oeuvre and it is shown here in one of its earliest iterations. Strangely however, the camouflage print used on this coat was not utilised on the runway despite appearing in a number of silhouettes including pants and t-shirts in stores. While not directly referenced, the collections themes are very much present in this garment.

The print for example, consists of pastel browns and greys that culminates into a natural foliage-like print. Likewise, a lightweight cotton polyester blend is used to accentuate the coat's boxy shape, allowing it to hold shape when worn. Falling just above the knee, its length and cut gives the coat an air of wearable versatility. It features a four button closure, side slit pockets, a straight hem and buttoned cuff straps. The exact silhouette can be observed on the runway in a more understated off-white coat, as well a slate grey.
