PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The distinctive print that weaves its way through these pants originates from COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS’ iconic Autumn/Winter 2001 psychedelic collection…Albeit reimagined into a new silhouette.

In 2005, COMME des GARÇONS founder, Rei Kawakabo, launched a unique - though now defunct - line titled COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS EVERGREEN, designed to breathe new life into archive COMME des GARÇONS collections. As the name suggests, EVERGREEN was an extension of the experimental HOMME PLUS line. Viewed as a “best of compilation,” EVERGREEN sought to seek inspiration from, and give new meaning to, past creations and present them in a modern context. Kawakubo herself oversaw all EVERGREEN creations.

Typically, designs reworked past patterns and prints, with the addition of a twist; typically in the form of a new material, slight alteration in design or a new silhouette - thereby maintaining the link between old and new.

These pants are crafted from a thick cotton corduroy as opposed to those from the original collection that were made of a supple velvet. The other noticeable twist comes in the form of two front and rear cargo pockets with hidden button closure for increased practicality. These enable a more casual feel than the streamlined originals. Of all the psychedelic prints from the original collection, this one was the most prevalent, appearing on blazers, pants, suits and hats throughout the runway. The repeated all-over pattern has a cartoonish element, with bright colours that, from a distance, provide for a novel, almost kaleidoscopic visual effect.

Presented at La Cigale in Paris, the original AW2001 COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS collection incorporated such popular movements and subcultures as the Psychedelic, the Mod and Hippie movements, while inspiration was drawn from Sgt. Pepper imagery. Created under the theme of “Looking at a Different World,” the show was a hotbed of energy that translated through the vibrant colours and eclectic patterns. Garments were ornamented by Kawakubo’s psychedelic motifs that in turn created a powerful visual effect. The hallucinogenic sensibility also translated into the casting, with an entanglement of models of all ages donning all manners of hairstyles: some with afros and dread locks, others with long straight hair and bowl cuts.

The pants featured featured in Japanese magazine MR. High Fashion No. 103 published in August 2001. COMME des GARÇONS founder Rei Kawakubo herself composed, designed and edited the editorial that incorporated garments from the collection made to look 2D on a mix of sketched figures and photos of runway models. All looks were styled on a stark white background that accentuated the collection’s abstract colouring.
