PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

For Spring / Summer 2003, Kawakubo saw her woman in transit, striding towards her destination with what looked like bundles of possessions slung about her body. The idea, according to the designer, emerged from the notion of a pilgrimage. Ties of fabric slings and knapsacks were both practical and aesthetic for the long journey ahead.

Hakama pants screamed practicality and made for the perfect companion for Kawakubo’s expedition. Like traditional Hakama-wear, these pants fall just above the ankle, and are affixed by two long strings that are typically wound around the body and tied at the rear - although no doubt Kawakubo would prefer that they were worn any way but traditionally. The unconventional length of the strings allows them to be left hanging loose, or tied any number of ways. The pants are constructed from lightweight cotton and are baggy and flowy, with darts paneling down the front and back of each leg. They appeared on the runway in several looks in tan and khaki.
