Raf Simons’ appointment at Calvin Klein in 2016 and the subsequent rebranding of its ready-to-wear line to ‘Calvin Klein 205W39NYC’ - after the brand’s flagship address - sent shockwaves among fashion circles, giving America the boost it had so long craved.

From its first collection, the output fused Simons’ key tenets of culture, nostalgia and youth with the legacy of one of America’s true powerhouses, to create a distinctly fresh vision of America today. Simons’ eagerly awaited SS18 show - which featured an installation from Sterling Ruby - was ripe with often cliché references to Americana, seen in the form of cowboy boots, western shirts and 50s couture silhouettes. Through his provocative lens, Simons tapped into “American horror and American dreams.”

Seen in look 50, and in various iterations throughout the show both for men and women, this shirt encapsulates the collection, and largely Simons’ vision for Calvin Klein. Its western style, characterized by snap buttons and pointed yoking at the front and rear, calls on cowboy cliche’s. Paired with meticulously tailored and patchworked colour blocking at each individual section, the shirt teeters on the American tightrope between Midwestern stereotypes and Hollywood Romance, capturing both equally brilliantly.
