PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Spring/Summer 2010 proved to be Alexander McQueen’s last full collection before his tragic suicide later that year. Across all his Spring collections - which included his iconic ‘Plato’s Atlantis’ women’s collection - there were links of piercing blues; and an emphasis on the notion of the artist in his studio.

His men’s collection, entitled ‘Analyse That,’ specifically explored the torment of the creative process. McQueen opted to present the collection through a short film and campaign, as opposed to a runway, in collaboration with British photographer David Sims. The film abstractly depicted the Pollock-esque paranoid block of a young artist in his studio; smearing clay on walls seemingly at a loss to link idea with action.

Pieces from the collection were hand-painted and had a very artisanal feel; some featuring masterly brushstrokes and line-drawn prints; others splattered with childish paint-smeared hands (a la Verner Panton for Dries Van Noten SS19); and some even exhibiting disturbing stains reminiscent of Rorschach tests.

These pants featured in looks 6 and 7 of the campaign - the former accompanied by a black peacoat and top hat; and the latter with a matching blazer to form a striking painted seam suit. Constructed of a summery beige linen blend, they are accented by a subtle brown double pinstripe. Their defining characteristic, however, is the electric blue paint that abstractly lines the front and rear waistband and adorns the pockets as though smeared by an artist in the midst of his process.

McQueen’s collections were often very self referential and for this reason SS2010 is seen as a key part of his oeuvre. The theme could be seen as a metaphor for his own struggle, showcasing the agony and the ecstasy of his creative process and thus shedding light on the inner workings of his tortured soul.
