Alexander McQueen SS2010 Hand-Painted Seam Blazer

Alexander McQueen’s outputs for both men and women for Resort 2010 were inspired by the notion of an artist in their studio. Some pieces had masterly hand-painted brushstrokes and line-drawn prints, others were splattered and smeared with childish paint smeared hands, while some exhibited disturbing dribbling prints of stains reminiscent of Rorschach tests.
With this chaotic amalgamation, McQueen evoked the agony and ecstasy behind his creative process. The relationship closely paralleled Jackson Pollock’s mid-century Abstract Expressionist works - a theme that became overtly apparent in a short film made for his menswear collection by British photographer David Sims showing a young tortured artist smearing clay and paint on walls.
This blazer represents the more refined side of the collection. With commanding broad shoulders and a dramatically cinched hourglass figure, it is the perfect representation of McQueen’s empowering feminine tailoring; the designer famously said “I want people to be afraid of the women I dress”. The exterior seams, pockets and lapel are all hand-painted cobalt blue, serving as contrast to the white base and accentuating the bold silhouette. The blazer holds its distinct structured shape thanks to its cotton/linen blend. Silver hardware at the cuffs and lapel are all engraved with ‘Alexander McQueen’. Given the artisanal nature of the creation of the painted pieces, each garment is entirely unique.
The 2010 collections mark McQueen’s last. The much celebrated follow-up, ‘Plato’s Atlantis’ took many of the same painterly qualities and colour-ways from Resort, evolving them into one final sartorially unforgettable collection.
