COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS x The Rolling Stones SS2006 Checkerboard Pants
For her Spring-Summer 2006 collection, Rei Kawakubo paid tribute to legendary rock band, The Rolling Stones, in an homage to rockstar style. The iconic “Tongue and Lips” logo - used as the cover art for the band’s 1971 album, ‘Sticky Fingers’ - was a key motif throughout.
According to original designer, John Pasche, inspiration was drawn from his first meeting with Mick Jagger, where, Pasche remarked, “Face to face...the first thing you were aware of was the size of his lips and his mouth.” The logo, now heavily ingrained in pop culture, featured on everything from shoes to blazers in various colours and sizes. Some iterations were strong, vibrant, multi-coloured, even psychedelic, while others were faded and unassuming. True to the 1960’s era in which the band was born, the logo was printed in a diptych across garments akin to Andy Warhol’s canonical Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyns.
The Stones’ countercultural influence was present not only in the clothes, but the way in which they were carried by the models. The runway was treated as a footpath for shaggy-haired youths to strut and dance down. Abound with attitude, some jumped the stairs, while others chatted nonchalantly amongst themselves, occasionally even interacting with the audience.
Made of a textured, heavyweight cotton, these pants feature a striking checkerboard pattern that, when mixed with an array of “Tongue and Lips” logos, combines to create a sensory overload of rock and roll iconography. They have a slightly cropped fit with an elevated everyday feel, and boast side as well as rear pockets. Worn in three seperate looks on the runway, each with the matching blazer, the checkerboard print also featured woven into an amalgam of Stones inspired patterns to form its own seperate print seen on jackets and pants.
