Ann Demeulemeester AW2019 Transformable Silk Wrap
Colour and Ann Demeulemeester don’t often go hand-in-hand. Yet, the Autumn/Winter 2019 collection was abound with colour, layering and drape.
Inspiration was drawn from 1970s Antwerp - the birthplace of the famed house - and specifically, artist, James Lee Byars, whose colourful installations involved huge bands of fabric that unravelled to dramatic effect. Designer, Sébastien Meunier used Byars’ favourite colours as the reference point for the collection.
Made of an almost transparent pink silk, this sleeveless wrap embodies the lightweight versatility of many garments on the runway. Designed with transformability in mind, it can be shortened, tightened, tied asymmetrically or left to fall, depending on the wearer.
Loose and unstructured, it can transform from a wrap into a vest, or even a tank. The proportions of the body make it a great piece for layering; while the shawl collar and pointed hems add a sense drama when combined with the vibrant pink.
