PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Renowned for his satirical designs that poked fun at the fashion establishment, Franco Moschino preferred the moniker of ‘painter,’ or ‘illustrator,’ to that of ‘fashion designer.’ Much like Andy Warhol was to Pop Art, Moschino twisted the imagery of a world he equally worshipped and criticised.

Franco Moschino launched his eponymous label in 1983, having initially studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Before long he became known for his eccentric and tongue in cheek designs. Moschino utilised fashion as a vehicle for social commentary, mocking the excesses of the 80s and protesting against fashion’s manic consumerism through puns, ironic slogans and appliqués.

These clip-on earrings are an example of Moschino’s earlier designs from the 1980s. Simpler in style, they feature a round yellow centre to imitate an amber jewel with the words “Franco Moschino Milano” engraved around the gold tone outer. Particularly fashionable at the time, gold disc earrings were used to compliment elaborate gold buttons that typically graced 80s suits and jackets. Crafted in gold-tone metal with clip-on fastening at the rear.

For Autumn/Winter 2014, current Moschino creative director, Jeremy Scott, ironically re-editioned these earrings on the runway for his debut collection as part of an array of parodies that paid tribute to Moschino’s iconic early riffs. The earrings appeared in 8 of the show’s first 10 looks, albeit deliberately enlarged for comedic effect - enter the typical element of Moschino satire - alongside parodies of McDonald’s, with the giant gold ‘M’ appearing super imposed on the Moschino logo.
